Duncan's Unique Origins
Duncan, South Carolina's origins go back to 1811 when a post office was established on the present townsite on Highway 290. But the coming of the railroad after the Civil War was the real impetus for the founding of the town, with its charter being granted in 1889. Today this growing community of more than 3,400 is a vibrant part of the Spartanburg County economic mix.
The Town of Duncan owes much of its existence to landowner Leroy Duncan who moved to the area in the years immediately following the Civil War. Someone who was fond of the limelight, Duncan offered to provide land for a community under the condition the town be named after him (from its original name of New Hope). His wish was officially granted in 1881.
